MatAmount started with a second trip to the supply yard.
Too many online calculators hand you one number and skip the part that actually matters: the waste you should add, the unit your supplier quotes in, the cost at your price. So you order the exact figure, the ground isn’t level, and you’re back in the truck for another half-yard while the crew stands around.
These tools are built to stop that. Every one shows the full breakdown, the quantity, the overage to add on top, and a cost you can set to your own numbers. They run in your browser, work one-handed on a phone, and load fast, because you’re usually standing on a jobsite when you need them, not sitting at a desk.
What’s here
Twenty-six calculators across concrete, aggregates, landscaping, roofing, framing, paving, and land, plus field guides that answer the questions suppliers get asked every day and per-state land price pages built on USDA figures. The tools do a few things most calculator sites skip: they handle L-shaped and split areas with add-a-section inputs, they remember the prices you type so your local rates are there next visit, every result can be shared as a link or printed as a ticket, and a project list adds up material across tools so a whole job lives in one place.
How the numbers are figured
The math is plain geometry and real material densities, the same figures a supplier uses. Gravel at about 1.4 tons per cubic yard. Hot-mix asphalt at 145 pounds per cubic foot. A standard block face covering 0.89 square feet of wall. Where a number varies by product or local code, the tool says so and gives the usual range instead of pretending there’s one answer.
The constants come from published references, not from other calculator sites. The ones we lean on most:
- Bag yields for concrete straight from the manufacturers’ spec sheets (an 80-lb bag yields 0.60 cubic feet)
- Concrete unit weight from ACI guidance (about 150 lb per cubic foot for normal-weight mix)
- Aggregate densities consistent with FHWA gravel road references
- Stair limits from the IRC (7.75-inch max riser, 10-inch min tread for dwellings)
- Land figures from USDA land value reports, updated as new reports land
- Playground depth guidance from the CPSC public playground handbook
Every calculator also carries a built-in self-test that checks its math against a worked example, so a code change that broke a formula would fail loudly before it ever reached you.
What these tools are not
None of it replaces an engineer or your local building department. For anything structural, these are a starting point, not a spec. They size your order and check your thinking before you spend money.
