How Many Cubic Yards in a Dump Truck? Sizes, Loads, and Weight Limits

Jul 1, 2026 · Guide

A full-size tandem-axle dump truck carries 10 to 14 cubic yards. A single-axle carries 5 to 7, and the little one-ton dump trailers you see at rental yards carry 2 to 3. But volume is only half the answer, because with heavy material the truck runs out of legal weight before it runs out of bed. Here’s how to read the loads.

Truck sizes and what they haul

Truck Bed volume Weight limit (payload) Typical delivery
Dump trailer / one-ton 2 – 3 yd 3 – 5 tons Small residential drops
Single-axle dump 5 – 7 yd 6 – 8 tons Driveway gravel, topsoil
Tandem-axle dump 10 – 14 yd 13 – 16 tons The standard bulk delivery
Tri-axle dump 14 – 18 yd 18 – 22 tons Big fill and stone jobs

Why the same truck delivers 14 yards of mulch but 9 of gravel

The bed might hold 14 yards, but the axles hold about 15 tons. Mulch at 700 pounds a yard fills the bed long before the scale complains: 14 yards is only 5 tons. Gravel at 2,800 pounds a yard hits the weight limit first: 15 tons is about 10.5 yards in that same truck. Sand and dirt land in between. So when the yard says “we can bring 10 yards a trip”, that’s a gravel answer; ask again if you’re buying something lighter.

Material Weight per yard Max load in a tandem (15-ton)
Mulch ~700 lb Bed-limited: 12 – 14 yd
Topsoil ~2,200 lb ~13 yd
Fill dirt ~2,200 lb ~13 yd
Sand ~2,700 lb ~11 yd
Gravel / crushed stone ~2,800 lb ~10.5 yd

How many loads is your project?

Figure your yards first, then divide by the truck. A 50 by 20 area filled 6 inches deep, compacted, is about 25 loose yards, which is two tandem loads. The calculators show truckloads directly:

Delivery-day realities

  • A loaded tandem weighs 25-plus tons total. Keep it off the driveway slab and the septic field; point the driver at the street or a gravel approach.
  • The pile lands where the truck can raise its bed: it needs about 20 feet of overhead clearance to dump, so wires and branches decide the drop spot.
  • Two smaller loads sometimes beat one big one: a single-axle can back into spots a tandem can’t, and splitting the order saves 200 feet of wheelbarrow runs.
  • Per-load delivery fees run $50 to $150. On multi-load jobs, ask for a per-load rate; drivers doing three drops to one address usually discount.

How much does a dump truck load cost?

The load price is material times yards plus the delivery fee, so the same truck costs wildly different amounts depending on what’s in it:

Material (tandem load, ~12 yd) Typical delivered price
Fill dirt $150 – $400
Screened topsoil $350 – $700
Crushed stone / gravel (~10 yd by weight) $450 – $800
Sand $400 – $700
Mulch (13 – 14 yd) $450 – $850

Per yard, the full truck is always the cheap way to buy. Two half loads cost one extra delivery fee and often a small-order premium on the material itself.

How many tons does a dump truck hold?

By weight: a single-axle carries 6 to 8 tons, a tandem 13 to 16, a tri-axle 18 to 22. The yards-versus-tons dance is the whole trick of ordering: gravel maxes the scale before the bed, mulch maxes the bed before the scale. If you’re converting between the two, the tons per cubic yard guide has the density table, and the cubic yard calculator does the conversion live.

Will a dump truck damage my driveway?

A loaded tandem grosses 50,000-plus pounds, so treat a residential driveway as off limits: dumping from the street or an approach apron is standard practice. If the truck must cross a slab or a lawn, ask for a smaller single-axle making two trips, lay plywood over the path, and accept that soft ground after rain will take ruts. Drivers will tell you honestly what their truck will do to your surface; ask before, not after.

Quick answers

How many yards are in a standard dump truck? The common tandem-axle answer is 10 to 14 cubic yards. “A truckload” quoted by a supplier usually means 10 yards of heavy material or 12 to 14 of light.

How many wheelbarrows in a dump truck load? A 6-cubic-foot wheelbarrow moves a 12-yard load in about 54 trips. Worth knowing before the pile lands 200 feet from the low spot.

Can I rent a dump truck instead? Small dump trailers (2 to 3 yards) rent for $75 to $150 a day and suit repeat small hauls. For a one-time 10-yard order, supplier delivery beats renting on cost and your afternoon.
