Coverage: ask, don’t assume
Farms cut pallets at 400, 450, or 500 square feet, and the difference compounds on big orders: a 4,500-square-foot lawn is 10 pallets at one farm and 11.25 at another. The weight problem
Sod is mostly soil, and soil is heavy: 1,500 pounds a pallet dry, up to 3,000 after rain. Practical consequences: a half-ton pickup carries half a pallet at best, a pallet parked on a hot driveway kills the grass under it in an afternoon of composting, and the delivery forklift needs a firm, reachable drop spot. Have the driver stage pallets around the lawn’s edge rather than one central mountain; you’ll carry every roll twice otherwise.
A 2,000-square-foot lawn, priced
With 5% cut waste you need 2,100 square feet: 4.7 pallets at 450, so you order 5. At $250 a pallet that’s $1,250 plus delivery, call it $1,350, or about $0.64 per finished square foot. Seed would cost a tenth of that and take a season; sod is green this weekend. Both are right answers to different questions.
Order timing, which matters more than price
- Sod lives about 24 hours on the pallet in mild weather, less in July. Order for morning delivery on installation day.
- Prep before it arrives: graded, raked, lightly watered soil. The pallet clock doesn’t pause while you rototill.
- Water within 30 minutes of laying, then keep it damp for two weeks. The farm’s care sheet beats internet advice for your specific grass.
- Buy 5% over the measured area. Every curve and bed edge eats partial rolls, and farms don’t sell quarter pallets twice.
